METALS-FABRICATION cont.
pound with a malleable hammer to create this mask. I used a long needle to engrave scrolling lines to the sides of the eyes, and geometric shapes to the jaw and chin. Eyebrows were formed by pounding a few holes with the same tool. The horns were bent with a pair of pliers and heat applied to the surface area. Then I looped copper rings through each rectangular metal strip and soldered them shut. Next, I attached
the horns and heated up the mask one more time. The connection joints soldered would weaken if overheated; therefore the mask would fall apart. Last I strung the leather ropes through the hoops and tied a knot.
Another art project I enjoyed creating was a ceremonial dragon flask. Molded from a semi-soft wax that can only be casted one time. Heat up wax and shape a sculture from one's sketch.
As one molds the wax, extend thin tubular branches of wax out from the sculpture. These branches allow for ventillation during the cooling off period. There needs to be a thicker branch extension on top of the mold for a tunnel spout. Then bury the sculpture in the sand and pour the molten metal into the thicker branch.
